First Oil Painting

Screw Driver
5 X 7 Oil on canvas
$120.00

Well I have been wanting to try oils again but really did not want to deal with the solvents and the clean up. Then I discovered water mixable oils, I am loving them. This is the first painting, I know its not glamorous but it was on the desk so I started to paint it. Actually painting odd indavituale items is great fun for me and sometimes the challenge of painting something one does not think normally as being pretty is half the fun of painting these items.

First Challenge done

Well I just completed the first challenge....... patting myself on the back!!! It was such a simple challenge, or so I thought, I actually struggled with it. All I did was to go back to basics but it goes to show just how important that is. I often set up single object still lives so that I can paint from life instead of my usual photo, but because I love to play with the color, often exaggerating and even changing it ( that’s an understatement! ) I never realized how much I was struggling when it came to the values, could be why it takes me so long to complete a painting dah...

Now when I set this challenge up it was really just to see what would happen with a very limited pallet but for me it turned into a value study. I really need to work on this and will try at least once a week to paint something just to study the value, I think maybe I will keep that tube of black paint out and just make it a part of my weekly routine.

I did learn from this I hope anyone else who decided to participate in this did as well and will share. I am pondering the next challenge.......

Added 9/6/09

Well folks unfortunately I have to put these challenges on hold. Time time time. As soon as things calm down around here I will start them up again. Thanks for understanding

Running Horse

Just finished this piece of Joe running in the field. Joe is in his 20's but you would never know it watching him go. I think I have the most fun when riding him he is fast and will out run any other horse. Even so I have never had a fear that he will run off, he always wants to please he always listens. This painting is not for sale it’s a birthday gift for my husband, cant wait to give it to him.

Weekly Challenges - week 1

Because I don’t have enough to do, Lol, I am going to set a new art challenge for myself every week. These challenges can be very simple projects to more intense ones, the key will be for me to think outside the canvas. I will set the challenge up every Sunday for the following week . What I would love is for other artist to join in, let me know and we can link our finished pieces together

Awhile ago I did this with a small group , here is an example of that, the theme was to paint in the style of.... so I did a Van Gogh pear

This weeks challenge will be to paint 3 paintings using the same object with three different limited pallets

1st will be white and one color
2nd, black and white ( I am not sure I have black paint if you don’t just substitute black with another color but if you have it or can get it use black)
3rd black, white and the color you used with the white.

If you want to join in but your medium does not allow you to work this way, example if you are sculpting an object, set your own challenge but make 3 different examples of it.

This is pretty basic but I want to keep it simple to ease into this. Good luck to anyone joining me.

White Horse Painting

I love the layout of this painting, the horses head fills the canvas and the angle is a bit unusual. This is the first major painting I have done since moving and it felt really good to have done it. I was not sure about the eye but the more I look at it the more I like it. The angle of the horse is different so at first I wanted to “correct “ the eye, open it up but no I think its done.

Ok I lied I don’t like the eye, it needs to be opened up. I will work on this at another time as I am in the middle of two other paintings but once I fix it I will re post the image.
